mEDIA CULTURE AND SENSATIONALISM
The media plays several roles in society which includes highlighting important issues as well as showcasing information seen as ‘sensational.’ As a result, the culture of the media has been shaped in order to ensure that:
· Messages become more persuasive and accessible to society
· Competition between media houses and mediums boost sensationalism (Sensationalism is nothing new, n.d.)
· News is more entertaining and more informative
· Journalists report more relatable issues than one with a complicated story to ensure an entertained audience. (Sensationalism is nothing new, n.d.)
· More entertaining news is reported which takes time away from reporting more substantial news
· Sensationalism has become a part of mainstream news (Sensationalism is nothing new, n.d)
In an attempt to reach a higher level of popularity, media houses use various platforms to appeal to the interests of audiences and disseminate information through sensationalism.
